Matt was admitted as an attorney in 1991, and as an Attorney-Advocate in 1994. His 30 year legal career culminated in his leading the Southern Africa energy team of global law firm Norton Rose Fulbright from 2010 through 2016.

Matt became involved in the energy and infrastructure sectors early on, handling major disputes concerning refinery refurbishment, oil rig conversion and refit, vessel new-builds, infrastructure failures, and other casualties. This led naturally to involvement in transaction work in the sector, where his extensive disputes experience has been invaluable to clients seeking to derisk their projects and avoid issues and errors that lead to litigation.

Matt has a fundamental 'hands-on' approach to our work. His extensive experience has taught that 'if one hasn't touched it and seen it, one can't fully understand it or what may imperil it, and one then can't  effectively draft for it.' So Matt will be seen clambering up catalytic crackers, crawling around mechanical plant, being lowered into cavernous holds, and tramping across project sites, all to get a proper 'feel' for what a project is really about, understanding the technology, and appreciating the risks and exigencies that a project may face.

On the personal side, as a committed Christian, Matt continues on a personal journey to improve knowledge and skills in the areas of Christian conflict resolution and apologetics. Having recently obtained a Masters degree with such focus, Matt now is a PhD candidate in this field.
